Is a Chiropractor a Real Doctor?

by Robert Walcher D.C.

The Truth about Chiropractors

A chiropractic doctor is probably one of the most
misunderstood healthcare practitioners in the medical
profession. Through the years they have been looked at
askance by doubters who are full of suspicion. In times
past, they have been called quacks, or worse. This is due,
in part, to the public's narrow and limited view of medical
treatment - being that solely of administering prescription
drugs and performing surgery.

It would seem that as we learn more, people would be more
willing and able to see the benefits of non-invasive
procedures to treat their symptoms. Taking medications
simply puts a band aid on issues that have a deeper
underlying root cause.

Sad to say, but even some chiropractic patients haven't a
real clear understanding of what chiropractic is. And for
those who have never been to a chiropractor, most are
totally misinformed as to the make up of the profession. The
fact is chiropractic is the largest drug-free form of health
care and the third largest form of any health care in North
America.

Understanding Chiropractic

The word "chiropractic" is a blending of the Greek words
cheir (hand) and praxis (action) and means "done by hand."
Chiropractic is an alternative medical system in that the
practitioner takes a different approach from conventional
medicine in diagnosing, classifying, and treating medical
problems.

Essentially, chiropractic focuses on the relationship
between the body's structure - primarily that of the spine -
and the body's function. Doctors of chiropractic use
hands-on therapy called manipulation (or adjustment) as
their core procedure.

Are Chiropractor's MD's?

A Little known fact is that a chiropractor endures as much
hard core learning as does an MD. They must adhere to three
years of pre-chiropractic study and then advance into a four
year course of study. They spend just as many hours studying
human physiology as does a medical doctor. The program
completion for a chiropractor includes 4200 hours of
classroom, lab and clinical experience.

The difference between the education of an MD and that of a
chiropractor lies in the fact that an MD trains in
pharmacology and surgical procedures and chiropractor trains
in the care of the spine.

Are Chiropractors Expensive?

Many people are under the false information that it costs a
lot to visit a chiropractor. The opposite is actually true.
A chiropractic treatment can reduce the needs for expensive
prescriptions, prevent surgery, slow down aging and result
in a healthier whole person that will need to visit a
physician less.

Most people who regularly visit a chiropractor feel that it
is a necessary part of their whole body wellness comparable
to good nutrition and exercise. After a few adjustments it
becomes obvious what a huge difference chiropractic care
makes and people seem to agree that there is no way to go
back to a life without it.

A survey of patients of chiropractors in an independent
physicians' association found that, when asked if they would
recommend their Doctor of Chiropractic to others, 95.5% of
the patients said "yes."1

Chiropractic care is a whole health experience.
Chiropractors take concern not just with the symptoms you
experience but with your overall feeling of well being. They
can offer you the ability to reach your level of optimum
health without the harmful affects of drugs or surgery. They
are more than well trained to address issues of concern and
are specifically and uniquely educated to fix them. - 15668
